Nancy Martin Sept. 2018
NANCY MARTIN : Mixed Media Opening reception: September 2, 2018 2:00-4:00pm Music by Cameron Alworth Work on display until October 28, 2018
The Ossartem show, Martin’s Latin neologism for “Bone Art,” features skulls and skeletons depicted in prismacolor marker and acrylic paints on bristol board and canvas. Each piece was sketched, inked, hand-cut, re-inked, and mounted onto a painted canvas. The pieces show a dedication to the accuracy of anatomical illustration but with an artistic flair. Each skull or skeleton was drawn referencing a corporeal specimen. Nancy graduated from Meredith College with a BS in Biology, focusing on research in Anatomical Sciences and Specimen Curation. She now works in RTP in the genomics field and lives in Raleigh, NC. She draws inspiration from anatomy and the precision of the creation of bone structures to be able to perform specific functions, mimicked in her precision cutting and rendering of these creations. The artist remarks, “It is a genetic miracle that each one of us is created in such a particular way; I think that my color choices might be influenced by that awe of each perfectly designed skeleton.”
